Mermaids are for Fishy Tales

I am a selkie-
Slippery and sleek, wild
I dart, I flit, I wonder…
Curious fish are my breakfast.

These cold waves and seaweed beds
Are my home, a deep green cradle.
Catch me if you can.
I’ll slip from your death nets,
Between your frozen fingers.
Give hasty life patience.
I have the flowing time, returning tide.
Never ending sea as mysterious as me…
Wait, I don’t shed my skin for just anyone.
You must be worthy of the truth.
My unattainable seaweed hair and little toes;
The concealed revealed.
My flimsy shell, my damp shroud
Is not yours to keep.
Nor am I…

Sea belonging.
Selkie- n. A creature or spirit in Scottish and Irish folklore that has the form of a seal but can also assume human form.

I like the varied wordchoice in this piece and how the poem is description and action at the same time. It's a pleasure to read something like this on deviantArt. I'm glad I stopped by. (:
